The Calgary Sun

Profile
As Canada's energy capital and Western Canada's business capital, Calgary is home to the second largest concentration of corporate head offices in the nation.

The Calgary Sun is a market leader both in terms of readership (41% market share) and the local retail advertising market (45%). Circulation has a split of 50% home delivery and 50% single copy, resulting in a high readers-per-copy figure of 3.6.
The Calgary Sun offers outstanding local, national and international news coverage, phenomenal sports pages, and a host of other unique products.

History
On August 3, 1980, the Sun rose in Calgary for the first time. The first edition of The Calgary Sun hit the streets, rising from the ashes of the defunct Calgary Albertan newspaper.

It was the third daily in the Toronto Sun Publishing Corporation chain - joining Sun papers in Toronto and Edmonton.
That first Sun was a definite hit with Calgarians, immediately grabbing almost a 20% market share in the Stampede City.
Circulation doubled in the first two years, and today the  Sun has 40% of the market.

Over the past two decades the Sun has chronicled the development of one of Canada's fastest growing cities - from the excitement of the 1988 Olympics and a Stanley Cup championship, through oil busts and booms, to a political revolution which set the agenda for governmental restructuring across the country.

Over those years, The Calgary Sun has seen its own share of impressive growth - new buildings, new presses, more colour and a large investment in computerized pagination technology.

September 17, 1994, marked another milestone, when the first Saturday Sun was published, making The Calgary Sun a seven-day-a-week newspaper.
