The London Free Press

Profile
Founded in 1849, The London Free Press is the premier source of news and information for London and Southwestern Ontario.
Its market covers the city of London and the surrounding 7 counties of Middlesex, Elgin, Kent, Lambton, Oxford, Huron and Perth. It serves nearly one million consumers and in London alone, the Free Press reaches over 75% of all London adult readers.

As an industry leader in the advancement of new technology, The London Free Press was one of the first Canadian newspapers to be fully paginated on desktop computers and was the first newspaper to launch classifieds on the Web. Since October 2001, the Free Press has been completely produced on a Goss Headliner press which replaced the old letterpress, a vast improvement in quality and reproduction of colour.

As a community leader, the paper provides financial and editorial support for business, sports, arts, health and education in the community and represents the region's very diverse economy .

History
The London Free Press had its beginnings in a small printing shop on the north side of Dundas Street, near the corner of Talbot Street. There, on January 2, 1849, William Sutherland started a weekly newspaper called The Canadian Free Press. At the time, London was a pioneer town, in the heart of a rapidly growing Western Ontario.

Four years later, Josiah Blackburn, a young Englishman who had a keen interest in both politics and journalism, purchased the paper. As its editor and publisher, Blackburn guided the paper through the transition to a daily in 1855, the same year London became a city. For almost 50 years, Josiah Blackburn remained at the helm of the Free Press. Successive generations of the Blackburn family followed in Josiah's footsteps and the Free Press remained under the ownership of the Blackburn family for 145 years. Sun Media Corporation bought the paper from the family in 1997, and in 1999, Quebecor purchased Sun Media.

In 1999, The London Free Press celebrated its 150th anniversary. For a century and a half, the Free Press has reflected and helped shape its community.
